Figures are from the Australian Taxation Office’s Taxation Statistics (Table 6B, 2022-23 income year), the most recent year published. Every figure here is an average (a postcode’s total dollars declared, divided by the number of lodgers who declared that item) — the ATO publishes sums and lodger counts by postcode, not individual-level distributions, so a true median individual income cannot be derived from this data. Where this page says “median”, it means the median of postcode averages, a coarser statistic, never an individual or household median. These are also individual tax return figures, not household income. Taxable income is what remains after deductions, so it sits below what people actually earned, and the gap is widest where business or rental losses are offset against other income — which is why a handful of small rural postcodes show very low averages despite ordinary earnings. Average total income is shown alongside it in the postcode lookup for that reason. Postcodes with fewer than 30 lodgers are excluded from rankings as unreliable, and the ATO’s “Overseas” catch-all is excluded entirely as it isn’t a real postcode. Average net rent is often negative because Australian residential landlords report a net rental loss on average — that’s a real feature of the tax data, not an error. Figures are indicative and not financial advice.

Bottom 15 nationally by average taxable income, among reportable postcodes. Read these with care: taxable income is what is left after deductions, so a low average here often reflects large deductions rather than low earnings. Many are small rural postcodes where farm and business losses are offset against other income. Postcode 4494 averages $4,308 in taxable income, for example, but $17,688 in total income. A low figure in this table is not a measure of hardship.
