Every figure below is calculated on Western Australia’s current published schedule using the same engine as the calculator. Examples use a new passenger car. The effective rate column is what you actually pay as a percentage of the price — which is not the headline rate wherever the schedule has bands or thresholds.
| Car price | Stamp duty | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $15,000 | $412.50 | 2.75% |
| $25,000 | $687.50 | 2.75% |
| $35,000 | $1,487.50 | 4.25% |
| $45,000 | $2,587.50 | 5.75% |
| $60,000 | $3,900 | 6.5% |
| $80,000 | $5,200 | 6.5% |
| $100,000 | $6,500 | 6.5% |
WA does not step between bands — it ramps. Between $25,000 and $50,000 the rate itself is calculated from the price: 2.75% plus the amount over $25,000 divided by 6,666.66, rounded to two decimals, and that rate then applies to the whole value. The effect is a smooth climb from 2.75% to 6.5% with no cliff edge, which is fairer than a hard threshold but makes the duty on a mid-priced car genuinely hard to estimate in your head. Above $50,000 it settles at a flat 6.5% — one of the highest headline rates in the country.
The same $45,000 vehicle value, priced through all eight schedules. Comparison assumes a new ordinary passenger car with no concessions. QLD uses the 1–4-cylinder category and the ACT uses the C-category (176–220 g/km). That is the highest car stamp duty in the country at this price — $1,237.50 more than New South Wales, the cheapest.
