Every figure below is calculated on Victoria’s current published schedule using the same engine as the calculator. Examples use an ordinary passenger car category. The effective rate column is what you actually pay as a percentage of the price — which is not the headline rate wherever the schedule has bands or thresholds.
| Car price | Stamp duty | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $15,000 | $630 | 4.2% |
| $25,000 | $1,050 | 4.2% |
| $35,000 | $1,470 | 4.2% |
| $45,000 | $1,890 | 4.2% |
| $60,000 | $2,520 | 4.2% |
| $80,000 | $3,360 | 4.2% |
| $100,000 | $5,200 | 5.2% |
Victoria's passenger bands apply to the entire dutiable value, so crossing a threshold re-prices the whole car. At $80,809 the passenger rate is $8.40 per $200 — $3,402 of duty. One dollar higher and every $200 of the car is charged at $10.40, taking the duty to $4,212. That single dollar costs $810. Green (low-emission) passenger cars stay at $8.40 per $200 at any value, and the calculator's supported new light-commercial category is $5.40.
The same $45,000 vehicle value, priced through all eight schedules. Comparison assumes a new ordinary passenger car with no concessions. QLD uses the 1–4-cylinder category and the ACT uses the C-category (176–220 g/km). That ranks 7th of 8 nationally — $540 more than New South Wales (the cheapest) and $697.50 less than Western Australia (the dearest).
| State | Duty on $45,000 | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|

| NT | $1,350 | 3% |
| ACT | $1,426.50 | 3.17% |

Compared without concessions. Vehicle-specific assumptions are shown above, so a different category can produce a different result.
Stamp duty is a one-off cost on the purchase. Registration is the recurring charge to keep the car on the road — a different tax, and the one most people mean by “rego”.
