The average adds up every balance in the group and divides by the number of people. A smaller number of large balances pull it above the median, so the median is the fairer comparison for a typical person. Both are shown so you can see the gap.

The measure is the super balance among individuals in the ATO’s 2023–24 snapshot, by age band and sex. The ATO publishes a median and an average for each group, and we show them as published. We compare your balance with the median, not with a percentile, because the data does not give a full distribution.
Only includes individuals with an account balance or current year contributions greater than zero. Number of individuals is likely to include double counting where a valid TFN was not provided. Rows are included only where Number, Average and Median are all published; rows containing ATO "na" values are omitted, not treated as zero. In plain terms, people with no account or contributions are outside the data, and some people may be counted more than once, so read the groups as a guide rather than a census.
Results are general information only. They do not measure your retirement needs, and a lower or higher balance than the median is not a judgement on your position. The ATO and the Commonwealth do not endorse this tool.

This describes what the data shows. It is not a target for what anyone should have.
Your own balance depends on how long you have worked, your pay, breaks from work and your fund’s returns. To see how a balance could grow under assumptions you choose, try the superannuation calculator. To explore how a balance could be drawn down in retirement, see the super drawdown calculator.
