Comparisons can make a number easier to understand. They work best when the group, the measure and the year are clear. Each tool keeps those labels next to your result and explains how the figures are made.
All three tools use Australian Taxation Office data: taxation statistics for income and super, and HELP statistics for HECS. For income, the source is the ATO’s Taxation statistics 2023–24, Individuals Table 3A. The comparison covers individuals who lodged a tax return, which is a different population from all Australians or all employees. It measures taxable income after deductions, rather than salary or take-home pay.
The income median shown above is calculated by pooling the published counts for all age groups and both sexes. It is not an average of the group medians. Inside the tool, the same method produces the age tables and your estimated position.

Your income percentile describes one part of your finances in a historical dataset. It cannot tell you whether your income covers your costs, how much time you work or what your household needs. A rank is context, not a measure of success.
The result changes with the comparison group. Choosing a sex compares with that group alone. For income and HECS, everyone pools the women and men in the ATO table, and for income the ATO allocates unknown or indeterminate sex to male. For super, everyone is the ATO’s published total, which also includes a small number of people not counted as women or men.
You can share your result without including your dollar amount. Share links carry only the comparison (a rounded percentile for income, or above or below the benchmark for super and HECS), the age group and the sex selection. They never contain the amount you entered.
All comparisons are general information. Each tool shows its age tables, source notes and limits together: income, super and HECS.
