Taxable income is not the same as salary
There is no single definition of a high earner. This table shows the estimated 90th percentile by age: the entry point to the top 10% of tax return lodgers in each group for the 2023–24 income year. It describes income, not wealth or living costs.

The population is individuals who lodged a tax return for the 2023–24 income year. The measure is taxable income, after deductions. Age is at 30 June 2024. The ATO assigns unknown or indeterminate sex to male for this table.
We add up the lodgers below your income band, then estimate your position by interpolating within that band. This assumes incomes are evenly spread inside each band. The lowest band includes nil and loss incomes, so we treat it as a step. The highest band has no upper limit, so we do not estimate a position within it.
Cross-check: pooling all lodgers gives our estimated median of $58,733. The ATO’s published median is $58,739, a difference of $6. We pool counts rather than averaging age-group medians.

A percentile tells you where an income sits in a group. A different age band or sex selection changes that group, so read the result with its label. The estimate uses taxable income in the source year, with no inflation adjustment.
For a separate estimate of what reaches your bank account, try the take-home pay calculator. It applies the tax rules for its selected year rather than changing this historical comparison.
Looking for average income by age in Australia? This dataset supports an estimated median by age, which is the middle person’s taxable income. It does not provide a mean in this tool.
